One late afternoon in Katmai, I was fortunate to be at the right place at the right time. The survival of brown bear cubs, Ursus arctos, is extremely tenuous. Up to 40% of cubs will die during their first year of life. Cubs nurse frequently on their mothers, but usually it is rare to capture this in the wild.
